Why I'm Running
For me, the choice to run is simple. It is about the kids, many of whom have been battling chronic illness since birth or whose lives were turned upside down when they were diagnosed with a life threatening illness. These kids are truly heroic, fighting everyday for not only their lives, but for a sense of normalcy, for the ability to do things that I wake up and do everyday and take for granted. But Beyond the kids, it is also about the parents. When I think about the worst thing, the most unnatural thing, that can happen to a parent, it is dealing with the idea that they could lose their child. While I personally dont know these parents, they are part of my local community and I think this gives us a way to show that we care about them, their children, and the struggle. It is more than an illness for them, it is a way of life and it shows sometimes how life is not fair. For me, I know I am blessed, so if I can truly do something to give back to the community in which I live and help families going through what may be one of the worst moments of their lives, I am going to do it. As we have become more technologically advanced, I feel we have become more disconnected from people, but it really does take a village and all of these kids are part of the local Northeast Ohio Community. It is about letting these family feel how much we care about them Finally, what really resonated for me this year is the fact that fundraising for this organization, A Special Wish Cleveland, was largely put on hold due to the COVID crisis. Not only that, but some of the wishes also had to be put on hold. It truly bothers me to think that many of these children may not get their wish when they need it most or the funds may not be available for the children that need emergency wishes. If I can do something to raise funds for this great organization that gives so much to the local children of my community, then I have to run this. These kids and their families matter to me.
About Team August

August is a force to be reckoned with; he has is own sense of style and isn’t afraid to be himself, even when other people may be uncomfortable with it. He is the child for whom we fought and prayed. We struggled to get pregnant with him. When he arrived, the world seemed a little brighter, a little better. He started having health issues a few months later. He had a couple of rounds of pneumonia and was hospitalized with RSV by 4 months. Soon after, he was diagnosed with an immune deficiency. Treatment for the immune deficiency changed our lives. He was healthy for the first time since his birth. He grew at a normal rate and was a great kid. In September of 2018, we noticed that August was having a rough time. He was 2 and extra irritable, just off all the time. He began having intermittent fevers. I took him in to the doctor, and they said he had a virus.

We had scheduled our first trip to Disney, and I was getting worried that he wasn't better, so I took him back to the doctor and told them that he just seemed off. They did blood work, and sent us on our way. The whole time we were there, he seemed just fine. They called me later that day and asked me to bring him back for repeat blood work. By the time we got home, I noticed a needlepoint rash all over his belly and back, and bruising on his legs and back. There was a part of me that instantly knew that he had cancer in that moment. I called his doctor and told her that I didn't know what the blood work showed, but I know that it wasn't a mistake. She advised us to wait for the repeat blood work to come back. We packed a bag and snuggled him in our bed until that call came. At 10 pm she called and told us to get him to the ER immediately.

I'd love to tell you that it was a blur, that I don't remember any of it, but I remember every moment like it was yesterday. It took 3 different nurses to get his IV in. We had to hold him down each time.T hey ran tests and admitted him. It was about 2 pm on October 1st when the doctor came in and sat down with us. He told us that August had B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, or B-Cell ALL for short. We were supposed to be leaving for Disney, but instead would be spending the next 2 weeks in the hospital. He was taken in the next day to have a meta-port surgically placed. They began chemo immediately after the port was placed. Since then, he has gone through countless chemo treatments, blood and platelet transfusions and hospital stays. He spent his third birthday at the hospital, getting IV chemo as well as chemo directly into his spine.

I know that all of this sounds terrible, and it is. August is 4 and he doesn't remember life before cancer, chemo, and countless doctors appointments. He doesn’t remember not having a port or having friends that weren’t at the hospital. That being said, this has also shaped him in a positive way. He is the happiest kid you will ever meet. He hasn't met a child or adult with whom he doesn't want to be friends. He is outgoing and the life of the party. He has grown in such a positive way since this has happened. He is the kid that you meet in the elevator that brightens your day. He knows almost all of the staff and kids in the cancer clinic by name. He brings them little gifts and draws them pictures. Cancer has forced him to forge new relationships, routines and created new obstacles for him to overcome, but he is embracing it and growing in the best way possible.
