Why I'm Running

Being a pediatric nurse has been one of the most difficult yet rewarding accomplishments in my life. I have been able to care for children in their sickest and toughest times, yet also be there is some of the most rewarding. To be able to put myself in a mentally and physically tough position - such as running 24 miles in 24 hours - in order to bring awareness, funds, and support to these kids, their families, as well as this amazing charity is something I will never take for granted.

About Team Emma

Meet our miracle girl, Emma! Emma was diagnosed with a rare and severe CHD, pulmonary atresia, intact ventricular septum (PA-IVS), hypoplastic right heart around 20 weeks gestation. Given low survival rates and facing one complication after another, she has kept her amazing medical team on their toes from day one & continues to do so today. After going into cardiac arrest on day 3 of life, Emma was placed on ECMO (full life-support) & then an LVAD for 3 months, with her only chance for survival being a heart transplant. She was sedated, intubated, and having the workload of her heart done by a device outside of her body with the help of several IV medications as we hoped & prayed for a life-saving heart. On February 13th, 2017, she received her miracle heart and has survived and fought through a rollercoaster of complications, including kidney failure, requiring dialysis, chronic lung disease with tracheostomy and ventilator dependence, wound infections, hernia, acute liver failure, and septic shock. She spent her first 323 days in-patient at the Cleveland Clinic, coming home with a tracheostomy, ventilator, oxygen, and a g-tube.

Today, Emma is 4.5 and thriving!! Her trach was removed, and airway reconstructed at the end of 2019 and for the first time, at 3 years old we heard her voice! She is now a little chatter box with an incredible imagination and so much to say. She has the most incredible joy for life and loves music, dancing, Disney princesses and being outdoors! She has been doing in-home learning, along with multiple weekly virtual therapies to help her catch up & is making incredible gains. We are hoping for her to be able to safely attend pre-K in person in the fall! She is our miracle & such an incredible fighter.
