Just like her name, Ruby is a rare gem who radiates love, light and positivity. She was born on March 11th, 2020, which was the day the world officially announced a global pandemic. The world shut down on the day she was born and has never been the same since. When Ruby was 2 years old, and her little sister Olive was just 3 months old, she was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a type of brain cancer. Our intuition told us something was wrong after many doctors we saw said that she was fine and was probably just getting over some kind of virus. After waking up in pain and crying while grabbing the back of her head for almost 2 weeks, we finally decided enough was enough and took her to the emergency room. Our worst fears came to life and Ruby received chemotherapy treatment for 4 months as well as a stem cell transplant last October. We stayed inpatient for a total of 78 days while Ruby had 4 rounds of chemotherapy. Ruby’s last round of chemo was high dose, so we stayed in the hospital for a month. On 11-11-22, Ruby rang the bell to signify that her treatment was complete, and we were discharged.
We are slowly getting back to our new “normal” and Ruby has scans every 3 months for the next couple of years. After 2 years it will be every 6 months. Right now, she is doing wonderful at home and her resilience and upbeat personality are an inspiration to anyone she encounters. Her laugh is infectious, and she is the BEST big sister to Olive. Ruby turned 3 in March and is looking forward to starting pre-school in the fall and trying ballet classes this summer. We can’t wait to watch this little girl grow because we know she will move mountains!”
